April 2005 Archives

April 1, 2005

They came, they saw, they.... took ?

Its April everyone! Yes, spring has started to arrive this afternoon, with sunshine! Coool :)

Some amusing 'puns' today on April Fools day, such as Google Gulp and Infinite Gmail storage.

However the best was the story that Cisco are buying the biscuit company Nabisco, and Lou Gerstner is going to run the business! Lou retired as CEO of IBM last year, but before that he was the CEO of Nabisco!! LOL.

Oh the subject? That's the TV. :( The engineers took one look and honestly said they were surprised on that model as they've seen about 100ish and its the first time on that one. Anyway, its back at their workshop and they guess about 2-3 days. Mr and Mrs Grumpy have lent me a little portable so I can watch the news, cheers guys :)

Busy weekend planned, off to Cambridge tomorrow, so have a good one you lot and I'll be back. (If you lot are still alive, hi Ribby!).

One day, maybe, one day....

I'd like to see this sign, and then drive for a week or two, and then see this sign. Well, probably not those exact signs, but I've been past the first one last year.

I'd hope to get some scenery like this, and maybe this would be quite spectacular.

A cross country exploration trip. Probably like to start somewhere on the east coast, maybe north east, and then end up in California. Would be a blast. Anyone interested?!

Its obviously a vehicle for mob rule

BBC article on the Blogging phenomenon.

Lever, straight across the US would be approx 3000 miles. I-40 is a little short, as it stops before the towns at each end, but the signs say 2554 miles.

US Route 50 is the more northerly option, and its local road, not interstate. Ocean City, Maryland (MD), to Sacramento, California (CA) is apparently 3073 miles. Checkout the site :)

Windows, broadband and flu?

Had new windows fitted on Wedneday. They did a 98% of the job, some cracked glass and missing panels and sealant on the front room ones, the others are fine. Have sent feedback...

I'm losing my corporate funded broadband, so looking around as to whom I want to sign up with personally. Looks like Bulldog are the only game for speed, for £30 a month I can have a phoneline and a 4mbps service, however they have an awful reputation, and I can't find out if the service terms are restricted. Otherwise I'll probably go with Metronet, who look pretty good and have clue.

At home today as suffering from a heavy cold, including sore throat. I hope this vanishes before monday... cough, splutter, achoo...ow.

Evening Ribby

Just back from a quick pub trip, good to see Mr Shack again, in fine form despite the recent mechanical work. :)

And more people watched the Grand National than watched Charlie's second wedding. Heh.

And now students essays are being marked by computer. Wonder who wrote the code, wonder if it was outsourced to Bangalore....?

Dentists!!!

"It'll only hurt for a second" just before the biggest, METAL, syringe appears. OMG!!

At least that part was over fairly quickly. Then I get a quick scale & polish whilst waiting for it to take effect. Then the drill.... and OW!!!!

"Oh, we'd better wait a bit longer" says dentist, vanishing to do something outside. I'm stuck under this horrifically bright light without my glasses unable to see a damn thing, and they don't have a radio. Why am I here again? Oh for my own good. I feel aged 10 again. Dentist reappars and she starts the drill again, this time my lip feels the size of the runway at Heathrow. Sheesh. Takes her time and then when thats done, gets out something I can only describe as a blunt metal prodding stick and starts scraping. ooeeer. I just know this is going to hurt when that sodding injection wears off. And this was for a replacement filling, nothing wrong with the rest of my teeth. (I still suspect the original dentist who filled it was on some high level of commission).

Anyway, she finally finishes and after a bit of checking I can still bite properly, announces its all done, see you in 6 months and pay at the till.

In the blogverse, Phut seems to be closed for redecoratation, or spring cleaning. Ribby's around, but everyone else (apart from Sue) on my links is starting to get mouldy. Come on you lot, or I'll be forced to unlink ya ;)

Vive la Banana Republic!

Apparently the postal voting system in this country is fit for a banana republic. (bananananananana....)

AWOL

Yep, I'm likely to be AWOL for a bit. Just had it confirmed my broadband reconnection at home is going to take a while, thanks to BT taking forever to disconnect, I suspect it will take forever to reconnect...

Back online!

As of this evening, thanks to Metronet, I'm back online. No thanks to BT for dragging their heals with an ADSL disconnect, line ownership change, ADSL reconnect.

Anyway the good news is that I'm now downloading 4 times faster, but the bad news is that I'm paying, not work. Hey ho...

(Hmm, the blogger blogs comments are broken - error 500?)
