Lever, straight across the US would be approx 3000 miles. I-40 is a little short, as it stops before the towns at each end, but the signs say 2554 miles.
US Route 50 is the more northerly option, and its local road, not interstate. Ocean City, Maryland (MD), to Sacramento, California (CA) is apparently 3073 miles. Checkout the site :)

Some interesting links there, nice one Red. Route 50 looks mighty like Route 40 ( http://www.route40.net ) and that Wulf Berg reckons he spent 2 years planning the journey... sounds a bit too much... 2 months maybe...
I like the fact he's pictured a GM Van ( http://www.route50.com/us50orde.htm ) v practical.
