Spyware on audio CDs

Actually much worse. Badly written software that will probably screw up your computer, automatically installing when you play what you thought was an Audio CD in your PC.

There is a pretty technical explanation, from a very good, very low level, expert in Windows and even he comments this is not good for the stabillity of peoples computers.

The comments are worth reading, its good stuff.

(Nod to Paul for sending that one over)

Skills

Had an interesting, if frustrating, week. Almost impossible to find anyone with my suite of skills available to assist. Even impossible trying to get someone on the phone to advise me for 5-10 minutes. We are all busier than a busy bee.

Whilst this is a good thing ( I got myself a payrise this week, and a v.good percent, wow factor!! ) the bad news is that it means I'm yet again overloaded. My line manager tells me "leave dead on 5:30pm, and on fridays come in late and do your admin". So I'm doing 58hrs this week, as that's not practical. Matrix management, who said it was good?!

Anyway, if you want to join the melee, you need Windows Server 2003, with Exchange Server 2003 skills, and be willing to work insane / inane hours, and hopefully know how to integrate another company with very limited timescales........

I need a holiday! Preferebly somewhere warm/hot like the deserts of California, Arizona or New Mexico in the middle of July or August....

Sony capitulates

Unsurprisingly given the amount of media attention, SonyBMG music are to recall all the CDs containing the XCP protection, and swap those already sold.

Full details on Mark's Sysinternals Blog, and a reasonable, but simplistic, report on the BBC news site.

This is good news for consumers, but Mark makes some very good points at the end of his blog entry, the entire IT industry and government needs to work out how to ensure this sort of nonsense doesn't happen again. Its not going to be easy.

Still here

Yes, I'm still alive. Nothing to talk about except work in the last week or so, but that should be starting to stabilise now, especially as the weekend working is done. Phew :)

Not good those people stuck in Cornwall in snow. That's not normal, Cornwall getting snow is it? Especially when we don't have any at all. I would have thought highly unusual given they are the furthest south, with the gulfstream. Palm trees grow there, so what is going on. Its an X-File.
