Unsurprisingly given the amount of media attention, SonyBMG music are to recall all the CDs containing the XCP protection, and swap those already sold.
Full details on Mark's Sysinternals Blog, and a reasonable, but simplistic, report on the BBC news site.
This is good news for consumers, but Mark makes some very good points at the end of his blog entry, the entire IT industry and government needs to work out how to ensure this sort of nonsense doesn't happen again. Its not going to be easy.

I love the line that Sony say they “will continue to identify new ways to meet demands for flexibility in how you and other consumers listen to music”... Well in this case it's - Buy CD, CD has 10 audio tracks, stick it in the CD drive and play 10 audio tracks, and that's it! It's cicrcumstances like these in which I wish people would just stop pissing about with technology, there really is no need for it.
I've got 3 CDs that I can not play when I'm on my PC - they're my bloody CDs, I paid for them so I should be able to listen to them on any CD drive anytime I like without stupid copy protection bullshit spoiling my enjoyment, let alone these damn rootkits...
