Over 2 months?

Yeah, I've been kinda busy and just not much to talk about.

However that all changed this week when our Labour Government managed to vividly demonstrate they (and the civil service) have no idea what computerised government actually means.

(hint: it means 25million people's private information can be lost in seconds)

I'm not going to repeat it all, everyone in the UK knows it by now, but for anyone reading this, please ensure you realise the Home Office's statement that "ID cards would be more secure" is *bunk*. Complete bunk. There would be a database in a computer centre somewhere, and that database would be run by civil servants, or for civil servants.

Identically to the child benefit database?

Wendy Grossman's blog is worth reading, its concise and to the point:

Trains!!

So I have to be in the Southbank office at 8:30 all this week. So that means the 7:16 train from Farn (main) to Waterloo. Since I cannot get up fast, I have to wake up at 6. I go to bed early most of last week and the weekend to prepare myself for this.

So by 3:30pm I'm flagging. Its serious. The training course I'm on is so not my topic, and its tedious design work (whilst I don't mind design work, I prefer implementation and problem solving. I believe in documentation after build !). Got home at 6:45pm, kinda normal. Knackered.

Its the same distance as I travel to get to work, and have done every day for 2.5 years. So why do I have to get up an hour earlier?

Trains are just not flexible, and the moron who decided the start time was 8:30am, not 9am, was a £$$"£$£"$"£$"£ git....

Interesting to read this from slynky, strangely enough things seem to have been getting worse (ie, more bureaucratic, for nobodies benefit) in the last 6 weeks.

Perhaps new jobs all around, but all I was offered when I checked was west london, road access only.....er no thanks, my current 40-50min commute could become 2.5hrs easily, with no chance of a hotel. Erm.... even for the perfect job... that's a definitive no!

Got an invite to a pub session tomorrow night, and since its a bank hol, that's excellent timing. Schweet.

Might have to get one of these sent over too.

The internet - will it, can it survive, in its present form

A good article from Wendy Grossman, quite a challenge coming up for the net. Although the idea that "laws" can be passed to regulate it per country has been shown to fail (just look at the anti-spam legislation).

Unless we have a 'world government' or I guess declare the internet its own country with its own government, unfortunately that can't work as vital servers that make it work have to be owned/run by someone with a hierarchy. Its can't be a cooperative venture. (Yes, I'm talking DNS).

Give me Space!!

Ok, so that's a quote from my mate's Marvin the Martian T-shirt (a cartoon I've still never seen), however it seemed apt.

After blogging last week about my trip to the southwest USA, this caught my eye... some photos and a couple of blogs about "SpacePort USA, new mexico". Yes, we drove through landscape like this, and we stopped in Truth or Consequences (TorC) for lunch. Saw the sign on the freeway too. Its a very isolated place, with one of the biggest missile ranges to the east, and mountains, plus flat lands with only abandoned "towns" (villages at best) in the middle of dust roads. I guess abandoned due to the harsh landscape. (For UK readers, this is at almost 5000 feet, so the sun is very strong, lots of UV, factor 30+ sunblock needed). A great picture shows pretty much what southern NM looks like. Pretty barren, but amazing.

Now the SpacePort pictures and SpacePort blog

Then you come to read the comments on the blog, and this stands out:

With rampant alcoholism, poverty, poor education, bad roads, water problems, and sagging economy is a Space Port the most important thing New Mexico needs? I can't even get DSL for my computer. Lets got New Mexico into the 20th.century, before we try for the 21st. and beyond.
David A. Sweetapple | 04.04.07 - 4:06 pm | #

He's right, the state of 1.5million people does seem to be very poor compared to other parts of the US that I have visited. Its quite interesting to see in a first world country. I prefer the EU approach.

Number 5 is alive!

Yes, I'm still alive. I'm aware its been almost 2 months since I last posted, but I've been busy. :-)

Just got back from just under 2 weeks in southwest US, and it was very hot, the country seems to be melting over on the west. Saw one report on the weather channel that Seattle was getting weather approaching 100 (F). Now that's mad... :-)

The reference is because I've just bought "Short Circuit" on DVD, as it was going very cheap, and watched it. Found this reference on Wikipedia too:

"Unrelated films often have parallel ideas, and 1986 was the year of the "cute robot". Other precocious machines were featured in Flight of the Navigator, Rocky IV and Space Camp."

Now that's quite amusing. Wonder if any of them are also going for £2... :-)

51hrs this week m'lud...

Yes, that's what the timesheet system told me. And that was only a 3 day week, two days booked to "vacation". Aiiiee.

Yes, I survived Paris for work (more like surviving the colleagues!) but a few "steak avec pomme frites" saved the day when the oldies didn't have the langwich.

Found this site (http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/) which I think has the best URL in the world. Might be useful to anyone buying a new PC. The legacy MAC parts have arrived, something to sort out on Bank Hol monday.

Off to the land of the French again on Fri, this time not in an extremely turbulant (read, I hate) aircraft. This time via Le Tunnel, or whatever its called now, and then a long long drive. Thankfully Mr Craig is driving, so we'll get there, just not sure what time :)

LOL at Ribby's response to my last post ;-)

Yes, its been a while. Its now May, but you wouldn't know it looking out the window. Today in fact apparently the M3 is flooded in places, there is an extreme amount of water on the road.

Work has me off to Paris to install a server, and assist with some user migrations where possible. I should be back Tues night, just a quick stop as they say.

Now what's the French for "its all gone Pete Tong" !?!?!?

Update

Yes, I've been working far too much this week (53hrs on time sheet, for customer) but more than that actually worked due to 'internal overheads'. It sucks working on a customer site when you're not in charge of your own time.

Anyway, at least I had the verbal complement "you're worth your weight in gold" for thinking quickly and suggesting a possible solution that amazingly worked, to a colleague stuck on his own in Rome on a Saturday.

Had a good lunch with mates in Fleet, and we sat in the garden, but typically I find when I get home that I've "caught the sun". In APRIL for crying out loud...

The Mac project continues, I had confirmation this morning that my accessories have shipped, so in the next few weeks I'll be trying some new stuff. My serial cable arrived yesterday, so it may no longer be an island soon.

As you can see, there is my primary machine on the left end, running XP, with the new high performance machine in the middle, and the Mac Plus to the right. To the right of the Mac is my surround sound speaker, and on the floor underneath is my old server.

However the Mac only has 1meg of RAM, and as I have the 30meg hard drive attached, I am trying to locate some 1meg 30pin SIMMs that would work, apparently 150ns and not EDO, and apparently the original 8 chip, not 2 chip version.

As you can see the OS works:

So, some new toys have appeared (e.g. the slynkycat camera) and so I thought I'd post some pics of my project. Click the icons for larger versions:

and it actually works! Running System 6.0.4 !

I've managed to create some floppy disks of the OS and the two applications, and I'm currently attempting to order some real OS 6.0.8 and 7.5 software on the special 800k disks. I've got some memory modules and an RS232 cable on order too, and maybe (fingers crossed) some sort of Ethernet adaptor.

Maybe I'll be able to get my email on this machine in the next few months. Not bad for a machine 21 years old :-)

Of course the other end of the room, I have a 4yr+ old PC, and a nice new Vista machine, currently running a trial of Vista 64bit. Hey ho.
